I have a barred rock hen and rooster and just recently hatched out a few chicks and I am a little familiar with the breed . Now , today I went and purchased 17 barred rock chicks and I am a little unsure if they are of not. I believe they are but some of them are a darker black and makes me question their breed, I was also told they were 5 weeks old , which I don't believe . I have also been reading about sexing barred rock chicks , something about black on their legs , spots on their heads and the color ??

Here is my rooster and hen ....I have no clue what is going on with her ! She has a bare spot on the top or her head and one on her side , she normally doesn't look like this and the only thing I can think of is the rooster has been picking on her ?

Roosters will grab the feathers on the back of hens heads to steady themselves while mating. She actually looks really good for a being the only hen in the pen with the roo, he must be a real gentleman.

As for the chicks, they look like Barred Rocks to me. The really dark ones are females. The males will feather in with more white in their barring.

Yes, you have Barred rock chicks. Your rooster has been mating/picking on your hen I think. It would be good to keep them in different cages away from each other. :)

I have had them for 3 months and this is the first time she has ever had a bald spot . That is what I found so odd about it ! About how old would y'all guess on the chicks ? I want as many hens as I can out of the bunch and I will be selling the roosters. How many roosters will I need ? The last time I have a good sized flock I had 2 roosters and 11 hens.

I was just taking another look at the pictures of them and if the lighter ones are going to be roosters , then that is the majority of what I got ! Crap !

I hate the supposed "st run" bins at the farm stores; they usually seem to be 3/4 boys. I wouldn't give up on getting your pullets just yet, hatchery birds don't always follow the rules.

You might have a hard time selling that many roosters though.

As for the amount of roosters needed for fertile eggs, I had 2 Roos successfully cover 52 hens. Remember the more roos you have, the more feather loss you're going to have with your hens. You don't want them getting too much attention from the roos.

I got them cause a guy was selling them around where I live . He ended up making me a good deal on all of the ones that he had and I couldn't resist. I had asked him if there was a way to sex them and it said he didn't know . I guess he had traded someone something and the 17 chicks is what he got out of it ! He was an old man cause he said he didn't know why he agreed to trade for them cause he didn't have a need for em ! Yea, roosters don't sell well at all where I live, they practically give em away .

Those were actually the only BR that he had . He only had ducks , geese and some small chicken breed . I was wanting to get some laying hens lol ....I would like to think he honestly didn't know ! He was like 70 and had a hearing aid ...Every time I would say something he would be like "eh" ! It was so hard to keep the giggles in . Maybe I will get lucky and out of the 17 only like 3 will be roosters....but I doubt that as well. I noticed though they don't really have cones yet ? When do those start growing good and changing color ?
