Hi, my hen, Snap, has been in the nestbox since about 9 this morning and it's 1... Is she eggbound? She was normal all this morning until she went in the nestbox. She's about 2 1/2- 3 years old... So do hens get slower at laying as they age or what??? I'm really worried about her. She's not very cranky except for the usual bits of growling if you get a bit close, but she doesn't puff up all that much. She has gone broody twice before, so do I have a broody on my hands or is she egg bound? Thanks!!!!!! -chickencrazy429

A pretty good test of broodiness is when they stay in the nest 24/7. I don't think a few hours in a nest is enough to worry about -- not yet. If she is getting sick, then it could be a lot of things besides eggbound.

Since she has been broody before, though, this may very well turn out to be what is going on.

Chickens loose productivity each year, yes.
Uh, yes to what exactly?

I think she's broody... She was also sitting on the nest a couple hours last night as well, and wouldn't give up the nest for Buttermilk who wanted to lay... Looks like another broody on my hands!!!

The OP asked if chickens lose productivity each year. I was answering because it wasn't so far.

Quote: Ohhh!!! Thanks. But I was more wondering if it gets harder for them to lay eggs??? Like, instead of losing productivity, does it get harder for them to lay an egg???
I'm pretty sure she was just broody. I stuck some ice packs under her this morning and in about 10 seconds she was off that nest and came to play with the others!!
