Please Help My Chicken With Prolapse

Hello all,

I have a chicken with a serious prolapse. I have tried twice pushing it back in but each time as soon as it is in the chicken pushes it out again. It is quite bloody and disgusting looking and I am wondering if the best thing to do is just kill it or do I have another option. Right now it is in the cat cage in the kitchen as I did not want it to get picked on by the other birds. I would be very greatful for any advice thanks.
 
I truly don't know how to help you....but I have to say, in this situation your risk of infection even IF you can get the prolapse fixed is huge.....I personally would put her down.

I'm so sorry-these types of decision are really hard-good luck whatever you decide to do.

peigal, welcome to BYC. Prolapse vent is serious and some people have success with preperation H to help with the swelling. Sometimes it is cured by shoving back in and isolating the hen to avoid others pecking at her. It depends on the strength of the hen.

Many times they are culled if they don't heal, however some have had luck with recovery and the hen laying normal again. There isn't alot you can do. Good Luck.

Thanks for your welcome and your replies. We will give her a night inside and see how she is in the morning. If she doesn't mend is it ok to eat her? Thanks
 
Hey! I just saw a topic on this on another board! If the tissue is dirty, you can rinse it off/ wash it with warm water. Then, these people used HONEY!

Rub/smear some honey on the tissue, and somehow it shrinks and it goes back in! Or, if you don't have honey, sprinke some granulated sugar on it. Its worth a try! I never would have guessed it.
 
I have a vague memory from a James Herriot book that sugar once was used as a farm remedy for prolapses in cows. I don't know the science behind it; probably it shrinks the tissues like Prep H. Good luck.
