Well It all started with a few Chick a few years ago. I got some biddies and needed a coupe, So did a little research and decided on a raised wire floor 4 x8 Plenty big Right. Lots of access etc, Or so I thought. Added a run 24 x 10 on to it. Thought I had the cats meow.

Well then we got more chickens, Tried a PVC tractor style Coop And then built another but with better access and wood box

Then A larger one with Larger wood box and bigger run. This one was so heavy my Lawn Mower/tractor could not move it so I installed the trailer tongue wheels, and it moves well. The back box is supposed to be raised for ventilation, It bowed, And as a kicker still cooked some chickens and I added the "windows" for more ventilation this year. Box is 4 x 8 run is 8 x 12

NOW TADA the ground breaking has begun. This has Build has been in the Back of my head for the last 3-4 years now, Its finally coming to a reality.
20x24 coop with 2 or 3 possible internal sections, area for feed, storage, and brooding.
Floor raised 30" so access hatch doors can open and shavings can be raked/swept into the wheel barrel. Allows for shaded area underneath with plenty of ventilation to keep it dry. Run will be attached. to left of the building and moving back and behind the garage (red building on right with fence) and back to the coop incompasing the pecan tree. Will update as I progress and have time.

Thanks for looking

I don't think I have ever seen such a large coop with the access underneath. Good idea actually. If you get a chance post some more pics.

I like you have tried several tractors. I actually prefer tractors for my meaties. Heritage chickens still go into a coop for me as well.

Wish ya the best.

Great start!

I'm looking to build a 10x14' coop, 24" off the ground. What made you decide to use 2x10's instead of all 2x6's? Curious, as this is a detail I'm still wrangling with over here. That and how many 'free' windows I can obtain before I need to get this thing built! (Current coop holds 12 well - have 11 adults, 4 up and coming pullets and now 18 new chicks from the broodies this year! Eek!) I better get my build on....

One detail I found very helpful on this site - install the windows so the latches are on the outside, so you can shut them without entering the coop. Ohhhhh, I type, favoring where the rooster got confused and pecked my shoulder as I passed him on the roost bar late last night to close his window! Grrrr.....shoulda let him get wet with rain instead! Must have awoken him from a good dream or something!

Good idea on the windows,
the 2x10 are for the girders holding up the 2x6 floor joist. I could have doubled up on the 2x6 as the girder but i thought the 2x10 would be a better choice since it can be screwed directly to the main pole posts and not double stacked, Also 1 2x10 is cheaper then 2 2x6 and the 2x10 gives me room for using a ledger board on the outer 2 areas, and the floor joist will set on top of the center girder. So the outer top of the 2x10 is 30" off the ground so the 2x6 floor joists are even with the top, and the center girder is 24.5" off the ground so the 2x6 rests on top of it. Ill take more detailed pictures when we continue construction on wend.

Measure your wheel barrel for your height, thats how i determined my floor level. Im going to build doors about 24" high and 48" long that i can open and push the wheel barrel up to and just rake or sweep the bedding out into for easy cleaning. ill make these near the pop doors,

Now I trying to figure out how i can hook up 2 or 3 pop doors to one auto opener. Im thinking salvaged greenhouse vent motor set up.

I still use one of the tractors they have there purpose and will not be destroyed, you never know when you might need more space. im actually going to be putting my current hatchlings in one till the new coop is finished. there getting a bit messy for there brooder now.

Looking for vinyl floor remnants and windows daily

Great start to what I am sure is going to be an awesome chicken mansion. I am currently in the materials gathering stages of my coop build. I plan on also building a LARGE coop like you have shown. Are there any tips and or tricks you might suggest that you have encountered throughout this build? How many chickens do you plan on housing in this coop. Are they layers or meat birds or maybe both?

Thank you for any advice in advance.
