I'm sure my chicken has a cold...

Ok, first post here and looking for some confidence in my actions and that my Henrietta will pull through!

This is the first time we've had chickens, and we love them! We've had them for about 6 weeks and things haven been going well, but no eggs yet.

But, bald to Henrietta... She had been presenting with a slight cough when we sat out in the run with the girls, for about 2 weeks. We didn't think anything of it, but on Friday, my husband was in the run and noted that she was drawing one leg up and was quite lethargic. I think she has a chest infection...

On Saturday morning, when I went out to check on them, she was perhaps a little worse... Had a foamy left eye, swollen sinus patch below her eye (left size only), mucusy beak and just looked unwell. So, on advisement, we brought her inside (makeshift enclosure in the spare shower, filled with newspaper and shredded paper and a cardboard box) and have given her pentavite (children's multivitamin) and some fishy cat food. We have also force fed her some electrolytes and mixed some general antibiotics in with the wet fishy food.

She was not overly fussed at being inside or being drip fed the pentavite and electrolytes, in her first round at about 11:30am yesterday. We also gave her some fishy cat food, which she devoured. My husband went to the grain store and also got some antibiotics, which she also devoured at about 2pm.

We fed her some more penetrative and electrolytes, similar to 11:30; at about 4 pm. She was less pleased about this and it was less easy to open her beak! We gave her some rolled oats, her favourite treat, and she pecked at these almost manically, She was a little feistier and perhaps she had started to feel better?

We mixed some antibiotic into her water bowl, and I popped some standard crumble into her shower enclosure. She was asleep on the grown, and so I moved her into the nesting box, where she has appeared to sleep all night.

It's morning, when I checked on her, she is still mucusy and coughs a it, but is more spritely. She is more alert, and he left sinus seems to have reduced in size. She has her neck out, rather than tucked in, her left eye is just watery (not foamy) and is a bit brighter.

So, I guess my questions are... How likely is it that she will survive? How long do we keep her inside? How long should we keep up the pentavite and antibiotics? Is there anything we need to do for her? All it be hard to put her back into the coop with my other 4 chickens?

No puss, just clear foamy. She is happy for me to wipe her eye and she's happy eating now... She's far more alert than yesterday.

That is great! If she did have the pussy eye that means she probably has a respatiroy infection and would take over your whole herd of chickens. I would keep her on the meds until she's better. And make sure she is eating. Keep us updated!

I'm just not sure how long to keep her isolated... And about the reintroduction stuff...

I would keep her isolated until she seems strong enough to hold her own. And I would just keep an eye on her when you put her back with the others.
