What did you treat with and how many days did you treat? I read a study that says treatment requires at least 3 days of fenbendazole (Safeguard or Panacur) at 20mg/kg (.2ml per 2.2 pounds).

I had a hen awhile back that looked and sounded just like a hen with gapes in a youtube video, so I decided to treat her with nothing but fenbendazole, but I used 50mg/kg for three days and she was better by the third day.

Disclaimer: I don't know if she had gapes and she's the only chicken out of hundreds that I have ever suspected gapes, but the worming did work with her.

Fenbendazole 4% (Panacur, Hoechst) administered in feed was used to treat chickens infected with Ascaridia galli, Heterakis gallinarum and Railletina spp. It was also used to treat Syngamus trachea in broiler birds. There was a marked drop in helminth egg counts in the faeces on the second day of treatment and the faeces became negative by the seventh day after the last treatment. Post-mortem examination 15 to 21 days later showed that the drug was 100% effective against Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum at 10 mg/kg. However, for complete removal of Railletina spp. 15 mg/kg was required. Similarly 20 mg/kg fenbendazole was effective against Syngamus trachea. It was concluded that fenbendazole is suitable for the treatment of the important intestinal and tracheal worms of poultry, a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg for 3 consecutive days being recommended for use under field conditions.

I treated him with Panacur but only did one dose. I will give him more today and tomorrow. He is still hacking when he eats. Thanks for the info. I will let everyone know how it goes.

How much did you give? Remember that it needs to be three days in a row and the amount you give does matter. Give no less than .2ml per 2.2 pounds.

I gave him a pea size amount maybe a little more. He was fighting me pretty bad. I don't have help so have to hold him by myself...lol It has been a couple days since the first dose do i need to start it all over again?

Yes, you need to start over. Do you have a kitchen or postal scale that you can weigh him on? Paste or liquid, the dose is no less than .2ml per 2.2 pounds. Let me know how much he weighs and I'll calculate your dose.

From left to right:
Small = 10mg ( .1cc)
Medium = 25mg (.25cc)
Large = 50mg ( .5cc)

Okay, so he weighs 2.04117kg, so that's .2ml (20mg) * 2.04117kg = .408234 ml, so I would give him no less than .42ml three days in a row... I always round up.

  • Calculate dose and prepare one or more syringes. Please note that this method will work for those who use a 1cc/ml syringe. Anything larger is too big and IMNSHO, not safe!


Please note that I was the one holding the bird and taking the pictures, please use both hands!
  • Hold bird - I like to sit with my thighs parallel to the ground, feet firmly on ground and the bird in my lap. I hold it gently, but firmly and grab the head.


  • Open mouth and wait for bird to relax.



  • Insert syringe - I like to insert from left to right, across the tongue, behind the trachea, into the oesophagus. Again, wait for the bird to relax.


  • Give wormer


  • Repeat in ten days.
