cheep quail pen

I would buy 2x2 lumber to build your frame. Each 8 ft piece is about $1.50 for untreated or $3.00 for treated. It all depends where your pen will be located. Treated for out in the weather and untreated for under a cover of something.

The following is based off of housing Coturnix Quail. For Bob White you will need to go much bigger.

Assuming that you want 4 pens (1 male 3 female) you will need 4 square feet of space for really happy birds. Cages 2'x2' And about 12" high so the birds can't bonk their heads.

Buy yourself 8 2"x2"x8' boards for the frame. And one roll of 1/2" x 1" wire for the cages. Buy a box of poultry staples 3/4" should be good. And a box of 2" or 2 1/2" wood screws to hook everything together.

Make your frame 8' long by 2' wide. It will resemble a long rectangle. Every 2' inside your rectangle fasten piece of your 2x2 to provide support and make the rectangle rigid. You will need two of these frames built.

Then hook both your rectangles together with 2x2 boards to get your 12" internal cage height. When you are done your frame should resemble a 3D cube. Now just cover your frame with wire, and use poultry staples to hold the wire on.

You'll be pushing $50 but I think it can be done on your budget.

This is 4'x6' and since I do construction I usually have the stuff laying around to make one, if not its only about $40 worth of material (depending on your wire selection). If you need to predator proof it you can just use heavier wire and run plywood strips around the bottom. If you don't want it so big you can just size it down. If you want a wire bottomed one you can also strip all of the fabric off of a twin sized box spring (for a bed) and just run wire over the top of the wood frame (you'll want 1/2"x1/2" wire for the floor) it leaves you and bend PVC pipes over the top like the picture above and fasten on wire and a door.

It only takes

1 20' 2x6
2 8' 2x2s
4 10' pcs of 1/2" pvc
35ft of wire @ 3 ft wide.
Plywood scrap for the door.

700

Not totally finished yet but will set you back only 20$

I'm actually a chick, but I think you did great! I'm hoping my "man" can do as well, otherwise if he doesn't wanna attempt it I will be!
