Breeding Delawares to the Standard of Perfection

Ready to do some learning.

I'm looking for some Delaware's to breed. I've made a few contacts here and there but nothing is happening yet. I'm looking for birds bred to the SOP but also with production in mind. I want those dual purpose qualities. I just bought an incubator so I can hatch eggs but I would also go with chicks or larger birds. I can travel but I'm not sure how far I want to wonder from Southeast PA as I'm a dairy farmer and don't have a whole day to drive.

If anybody has what I'm looking for either reply or PM me.

thanks,
Matt

I would point you to some SOP Dels if I knew where they where. The closest but still needs work are the recreated ones from Kathyinmo . Several people across the country have them but don't know anyone real close to you. I believe there is one person in mid Delaware and I am in lower VA.

Dairy Farmer ? - around here in VA every dairy farmer I am aware of has closed up in the last two years . Most have converted to Angus or similar breed. Wish you the best in the milk business.

Back to Chickens- What are your expectations on the Del show or dual purpose ?

You might want to check the thread on the line mentioned which are now in the F5 stage.

Hey! I'm in north east Md. I don't have the best birds but they are great layers. I only have a trio and get an egg a day from both hens. I have just started hatching out delawares since last week. here is some pictures of the trio.

Well - here is what we are all looking for

Please enter my order for one Cock and five Hens from the above. LOL
I look at these every time I think we have a nice SOP Delaware and it brings
me back to reality LOL

There are so few Delawares being bred to Standard that finding them in your area may be difficult.

Remember, with Delawares, breeding to Standard is breeding for production. The APA description calls for birds that are productive as layers and have excellent meat quality as broilers.

The Livestock Conservancy breeder directory lists 2 breeders in PA. James Guinn in Bartonsville & Kerryann Sanocki in Furlong. I do not know the quality of their birds.

You were given the name of a breeder with decent Delawares on the other thread. You may have to decide between getting them from someone close by, or getting good stock to start by shipping.

I wish you the best. Delawares are not as easy as more common breeds ie White Rocks etc.
