Too Many Chickens

My chickens all had chicks
and I've got more than I can keep.
Perhaps you'd like to purchase one?
They're cheap, cheap, cheep!

--Kenn Nesbitt

Last night I dreamed of chickens,
there were chickens everywhere,
they were standing on my stomach,
they were nesting in my hair,
they were pecking at my pillow,
they were hopping on my head,
they were ruffling up their feathers
as they raced about my bed.

They were on the chairs and tables,
they were on the chandeliers,
they were roosting in the corners,
they were clucking in my ears,
there were chickens, chickens, chickens
for as far as I could see...
when I woke today, I noticed
there were eggs on top of me.

Sound familiar? Then you must have my addiction!

My name is Simon and I live in Grant, MI. It's a small town about an hour north of Grand Rapids, MI (the second largest city in Michigan) and is about 45 minutes from Lake Michigan. I have been into chickens ever since I was a small child of the age of 8. My mother and father noticed my addiction to all animals great and small, from crawly things to climby things, from furry things to scaly things and all animals in between and decided to indulge my childhood fanaticism with a small flock of Salmon Favorolles which I picked up in Saint Johns Michigan after our monthly trip to see my Grandfather. I was so excited when I got my flock, had zero to no advice and did every little task from building the coop (with a little "borrowed" materials from a neighbor my mom tells me!) to feeding them all by my 8 year old self. I did this until I moved out of my parents home at age 17. Well roll ahead to year 2014 and the acquisition of some land and a home. Now 36 years old, using my previous years experience as a child along with some acquired knowledge from all of you BYC members, much reading and research and a passion which still existed even after all those years without chicks I decided to re-indulge my fantasy. I currently am raising 28 birds along with 4 ducks. I have 16 Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhaubens, 5 Golden Laced Cochins, 2 Millie Fleur D'Uccles, 2 Silver Seabrights, 1 Black Sex Link, 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Pekin duck and 3 Blue Swedish ducks.

Chicken math? That makes 30! I just realized this as I was writing! Funny.

I share my love of birds with my wonderful wife of 8 years and my 3 month old son, 7 year old daughter, 11 old daughter and 3 year old son. Of course we also have 2 Ferrets, 1 painted Yellow Slider and 1 Maine Coon cat.

I am always on the look out for new chicken friends on BYC and the community. I am an easy going guy that loves people and loves animals even more. I would love to hear your stories of chicken-hood and family.

I look forward to seeing you all on BYC!

My 3 week old Appenzeller Spitzhauben (Rooster).

My Fleur D'Uccle at 3 weeks.

My Coop in Early Construction.

What it feels like in Michigan most of the time. LOL.

My ducks as tiny babies.

Best package ever!

Best wishes and many a happy flock!

What a cute little poem! I am sure nearly everyone can relate to Obsessive Chicken Disorder! LOL
