We need help and are very new to chicken life. Yesterday eve we went to close the hens in for the night and noticed that all were perched and one was on the corner not looking so good we moved her closer to check her out and noticed that her vent look like it was contracting we it would push out it looked like the pictures of prolapse but would then go back in the vent. We left her alone for about ten min and checked on her again and found that she had laid this thing that is semi soft. My husband lifted her onto the roost and she finally got comfortable and her vent looks normal again this morning. Some people have said maybe she needs more calcium. Yesterday before this all happened we went to our wharf on town and asked them what we need for everyday chicken life and they have us some oyster shell and we mixed some scratch with mealworms they said to give a handful to all seven chickens once a day and that's it because it's like ice cream. We have them on laying pellets also. The one laying pellets said it had oyster seed in it but that guys said we should just feed them a small bucket to keep in the coop. So we did that. Every morning around 7:00 we open up the coop and they have free range of the backyard. They eat bugs all day in the yard is it possible they need to be left in their coop at least for the morning so they will eat just their laying pellet and oyster shells. I rarely see them go back in the coop during the day to eat because they are feasting on nature in the yard. Sorry so long thank you for your feedback I should say this morning we wen to check and she looks ok now and is up walking around and eating again but we just kept them in the coop to make sure they are eating enough of their food. One more thing I did notice a couple days ago one egg looked like a tear drop and the outside of the eggs feel like a textured wall

First, welcome to BYC!

Every now and then a hen lays something odd, as long as she is acting normally there is nothing to worry about.

My coop doors open at 6am and there is a mad dash for the outdoors. I feed them outside, they only go in to lay their eggs and roost for the night. Can you put their feeder outside for them? Chickens out foraging don't need a lot of supplements. Mine get their organic feed, (which they will ignore for bugs and weeds) free choice oyster shell in a dish, and a treat block.

Thank you for replying! We leave the doors open on the bottom coop and that is where we keep the feed so they can go in and eat whenever they want and we have a bucket of oyster hanging on there also. I don't know if they are eating it. Do you think we need to keep it in the yard? Or do you think they know to go and get it in the coop when they want. She just seemed so uncomfortable last night I was so worried about her but today she has been good walking around and eating so we will see if she lays an egg tomorrow.
