Hi everyone,

Thought I'd introduce myself and my girls!

I live in a rural area about halfway between Houston and Galveston. I'm a life-long dog lover, but this is my first experience with birds. I wanted chickens for the eggs, but who knew I'd actually enjoy them so much just for themselves!

I have six 5 1/2 week old Buff Orpingtons. When I first got them I couldn't tell them apart AT ALL, and they did sort of act like mindless little drones (eat, poop, sleep, repeat), so I jokingly gave them Borg designations: 1 of 6, 2 of 6, etc, which is where "6of6chicks" came from. It just sort of stuck, and now they have numbers for names! (And yes, I'm that big of a nerd!)

Here are a few cute pics of my girls:

Discovering grass for the first time!

Growing up fast! (5 weeks old)

This is the coop & run that I built for them. BIG THANKS to the BYC community for all the coop stories - it was from your designs and ideas that I learned how to do this!

And not to be left out, this is Tally, their new best friend and protector:

It took a whole LOT of training and socializing to convince Tally that chickens are family members, not toys (or food), but she finally got the message!

I loved reading your post!! Don't feel alone...there are a lot of 'nerds' here at BYC that love their chickens as much as you do! Thanks for the pics, your Orps are gorgeous!

Welcome to BYC!

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I love your pics! Especially the first one! They are just adorable!

The buff orp is one of the best breeds you could own! I have three. You won't regret them!

Love your pics! Enjoy your new babies and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Nice pictures and what a cute flock, like how your dog and your chickens are the same color! Very good looking coop you built also.

I'm a geek. I can appreciate Borg chicks. "Resistance is Futile" when you get the chicken bug. Ever since I got my chickens, though, my wife has noticed how much more time I spend outside instead of playing video games on the computer.

Hahaha, I too have borg hens (1of4 thru 4of4), but they are Black Australorps instead of Buff Orpingtons. They are alternately known as "the gang of four" and the "congressional black caucus".
Enjoy your gals, it's tough to know what is more valuable, the eggs or the entertainment! Was there ever a better show than Star Trek??

Thanks for all the welcomes! That's so awesome!

I agree it's funny that my chicks and my dog have the same coloring. Happy accident. I chose Orpingtons because I kept reading how gentle and good natured they tend to me, and because they were recommended as good newbie birds. So far everything I've read is spot on - these girls love being picked up and petted, they come when called, and they finally learned that freckles aren't food and quit pecking me!

And yeah, big Star Trek geek. Even bigger sci-fi geek in general. I really wanted a TARDIS for a coop (how cool would that be??), but I couldn't get the dimensions right (for some reason my just wasn't bigger on the inside!).
