chicken has start of possible prolapsed rectum

The longest I have left a pressure bandage on is 9 hours for overnight. She had poo in it, but had not forced the prolapse back out.

My hen looked like yours, even to the point of looking like everything internally was trying to come out, an egg in the extended prolapse hanging outside of her body that i was able to manipulate out. Using the pressure bandage and liberal use of honey, prep H, warm baths, ky to keep area moist she DID recover.

I have to check her more often than the others for how she is doing as she will prolapse occasionally but not as bad. Gently rubbing the exterior vent to make it pulse/twitch is usually enough now to make it retract back inside. She lays an egg every other day, she is over a year old now and coming up on her POL egg anniversary.

I hope your girl recovers, it is a lot of work getting the prolapse to heal and the decision to keep trying or let them go is hard. Wishing you both the best, strenght, and patience.

My goodness, I'm amazed that you were able to get it back in, and that she is still alive. You have to be credited with trying so hard to save her. Casportpony and Sarevan have both had success treating this, and we all sure hope that your hen will make it. If the vet (or even a large animal vet) on Monday could put in the purse string sutures on her vent it would probably be easier on you.

very good! seems to be improving. it might come out once or twice more when she tries to poop but it will be easily pushed back in since it isnt as severe now :) good luck! dont give up :)

Everyone has been great on here . So helpful and supportive. I am sad to say though I made the decision to put her to sleep last night. I thought she was going to make it yesterday morning but she ended up prolasping again. Bloodier than ever.. I hadn't even posted the worse picture - it was tomato size and angry red.... I am very upset I feel like I didn't do enough or there was more I could of done but in the end I felt like she was suffering . I can atleast I guess feel better knowing that where I took her from she would not of made it this far since she was partially blind... and atleast the night before she was somewhat happy sleeping on the couch with me in her pressure banadage... I don't think I'm cut out to own chickens ......I can't handle the loss of them
Thank you again everyone you were all so supportive and helpful :) without you guys I would of been lost

I would like to say that I'm sorry you lost her, but you tried very hard to save her from something that most people used to immediately cull for. We get more attached to them when they are sick, and we are trying to help them, so it's more upsetting. I'm glad you had the time to work with her all those days, but there was nothing else you could do.

Don't be hard on yourself... I don't think there is anything to do for them when they're that bad.
