Hi All! I need to start offering crushed oyster/egg shells to my very first ever laying hen and was curious to see what your set ups were in your coops or runs for "feeders" when it comes to crushed shell :)

I do have roosters that have access to the same feeder as well as younger hens that have not started laying yet, should I be concerned about too much calcium for non layers and Roos?
 
I'm using a metal rabbit feeder, which I doesn't really work well, with a piece of vinyl flooring to block off the mesh bottom and a piece of fencing in the opening to try and stop billing, in my main coop.




But just made one out of a plastic salsa jar(32oz.Pace brand from Sams Club) that I think is working excellent in my junior coop.
The jar is about 9" tall and the opening, that I cut with a rotozip type bit, is big enough for them to put their head in there but not bill the stuff out.
The jar is shaped as such that I as able to use a large ziptie to attach it to the hardware cloth(which you can't see as it's covered with feedbags).

I'm going to make another for the main coop as soon as I empty another jar of salsa.


I use a wide necked plastic bottle(Spartan brand corn syrup) to store dried and crushed chicken egg shells mixed with oyster shell, makes it easy to fill both shell feeders.

You can also use a milk jug. Cut out a corner or side then use handle to hang off floor which cuts down on waste. I even had a small hen nest in a milk jug...she was so cute.
