Hello everyone. Since all of the threads about this amazing breed are several years old, I thought a new one was in order.

I wanted to focus on breeders in the U.S. but any and all input from all over is welcome!

So far the only U.S. seller I have been able to find (up to date) is SandHill Preservation. I just placed an order and am expecting them sometime in June.

In the meantime, tell me about your Dumpys (or want of), please share pics, info, breeding strategies, and the like!
 
So I just received confirmation from SandHill Preservation for my order.

With all of these bookings for Scots Dumpys I want to know where they are!!!!

I've never had Scots Dumpys, but I like the look of them, and based on everything I've read about them they sound like a great breed. Maybe one of these days I'll get some myself. :eek:)
 
Hey Michael, they are so hard to find. All I have been able to locate are the cuckoo color from SandHill. I hope to find some other colors and play with the genetics a bit.
Since you cannot breed a short-leg to a short-leg I think it would be fairly easy to choose another breed to cross into them for other colors. I have considered the Austrolorp, since the body shape is similar, and I like solid black birds. I think theat would be the easiest color to start with. I also would like to create a EE Dumpy one day (I have Lav Ameraucanas and if I understand correctly they would create black offspring)!

I just can't wait to own this amazing old breed!

Australorps would also give you the added benefit of breeding the Australorps calm and gentle temperament, and excellent, egg laying ability into the flock.
 
Yes I can't think of a better breed for all thier positive aspects, than the Austalorp!
Dumpys are supposed to be a docil and gentle breed as well. They for all purposes are meant for a small homestead. The short legs keep them near while the large stature kept them from being too easy as prey.
There is also lituature that refers to Dumpys as an 'alarm' system for the Celts!
I just hope this doesn't mean that they are going to be super noisey. I don't mind chattery birds or even those that give a good alarm call, but I've had hens, of other breeds, that put my roos to shame with their cackling!
 
Still waiting on my Dumpy's. It seems Sandhill is having trouble with that breed this year (of course). There are two orders in front of me. I did tell the poultry manager that I would be perfectly happy with split orders, so we will see. We had a good long chat and I was able to help him with the mystery of why virtually unknown breed has picked up so much this year!
The Author of an amazing book series Diana Gabaldon introduced this breed in the 8th book of her Outlander series. These books were just picked up by Starz this year so there is LOTS of buzz and new readers!
My personal interest is the historical mentions of this breed. Such an old and interesting breed deserves more attention.
 
Hello @maralpz2006 I was in touch with Sandhill throughout the Summer. They are the only breeders I have been able to find here Stateside!
Sandhill aparantly had rough fertility, and increased orders, this year with their small flock of Dumpies. I was never able to recieve my order of Scots Dumpys from them this year. I understood that they are not offering the Dumpies in the catalog for the 2016 year, so that they can find fresh stock, and increase their numers.

I am still on the hunt for Scots Dumpy breeders in the U.S.
 
thank you tarabellabirds ,i was thinking to order some but now that you are telling me i dont know if i m gonna do it ,but if you find somebody else please let me know,
