I am having the same issue with my Khaki Campbell. He is roughly 2 months old, and it almost looks like he doesn't have an ankle. No issues with him up until a week or so ago. Poor guy uses his beak and knees to hobble around. I have NO IDEA what is wrong with him let alone how to help him...I sure hope someone has some helpful hints for us..
Thanks for the reply. Yesterday (duckling is now 18 days old) I went and bought Niacin. After running around like a maniac to find something that wasn't flush free -or- timed release (TSC, CVS, Walmart, Walgreens), I found something at GNC (http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=16120296). I think (hope!) this is a correct product, although it came in tablet format. After purchasing a pull crusher, we mixed this with 2.5 gallons of water, and fed it to the ducks. This morning, the little duckling is standing and walking around a bit and appears to be much better.
We'd mixed brewers yeast 1 scoop to 1 cup of feed since birth; I'm shocked that this duckling was still Niacin deficient, however, it appears she just needs her vitamins. I'll keep you all posted as things progress in case anyone else experiences this issue (and to give results of the GNC product.)
!0-12 weeks, depending on how severe the diff is how long it may take to recover. sounds like your seeing improvement and that what counts. She's still quite weak, but she'll stand when she has some motiviation to. Does anyone know what the timeline typically looks like until she should be back to normal? From my reading we should keep her on the niacin until 8 weeks, however, when should I anticipate a more normal behavior (running around like the other crazy ducklings)?
Could be an infection, a spinal injury, or nutrient deficiency. I need to turn off the computer for a while, but I will ask - what is he eating?
In any case I would start adding a tablespoon of brewer's yeast (not baking yeast) per cup of food right away in case it is a B vitamin deficiency.
A vet visit if possible is best - but if they suggest euthanasia, I would not do it at this point. It is not uncommon for ducklings to have such difficulties, and they can recover with proper treatment.
