I thought I would share with you all this funny little experience we had this morning. It's a true story and the names have not been changed to protect the innocent.
Cast of characters
Momma duck in front yard (Cher)
Baby Duck #1
Baby Duck #2
Momma Ducks in back yard (Thelma and Louise)
10 baby ducks ( not named)
Clyde male pekin duck who watched over Cher while she sit on eggs and is claiming to be the babys daddy of #1 duck and #2
Sonny (runner duck who was just curious as to what was happening)
I was feeding Cher this morning and found that she only had #1 baby duck with her. Cher and Clyde were beside their selves a baby was missing.
I go to feed the momma ducks and the babies in the back yard and I noticed one baby duck running along the chain link fence by himself. He was quacking and making a lot of noise. I start counting babies 10 ducks with the mommas and 1 by itself. Momma ducks keep rushing over to the fence trying to get the little duck to join them.
I come in and tell Hubby I think the backyard momma ducks have kidnapped the #2 duck from the front yard. The back yard is fenced in and the only way the #2 duck got in was to go threw the chain link fence but it wasn't able to get back out. Momma ducks from the back yard was already claiming the baby duck as their own and they are aware that possession is 9/10s of the law. I am not going to battle with two mother ducks and my husband decided he would handle this. He brought Cher (front yard momma) and her remaining baby, Clyde and Sonny followed the group I would guess for moral support. My husband opened the gate and in marched all ducks. They stood there and Cher called the #2 duck over to them. He gladly left the group and the 2 backyard mommas stood glaring at them. Cher and her entourage turned and filed back out the gate.
#1 baby duck and #2 baby duck are happily together again in the front yard closely watched by Cher and Clyde.
