Help is this bumble foot? I soaked her foot in Epsom salt and picked at it. How do i get rid of it? Is this bumble foot, if not what is it. What harm can it cause my chicken?

I had 3 hens with that. I was scared & had no idea what to do, but my vet would charge 45 dollars for the visit & a couple hundred more to fix it so I watched youtube videos.

Ur pic looks like it is fairly early. One of my birds was exactly like that. She Was Limping too.

After watching a billion videos, I placed her on a table with a towel over her head. My husband made sure she was breathing the whole time & kept her calm. I cleaned it really good with epsom & warm water, then I used an exacto knife to cut out the dark piece. Then I used Peroxide Several times, They foamed a lot & bled a bit too. After I was done, I applied melaluca oil, I'm sure any disinfectant or antibiotic cream would work. Then I put more oil on a piece of cotton, stuck the cotton on the wound & wrapped the foot.

I left it wrapped for 2 days, removed & it healed, no prob.

The 2 other hens were worse off & I had to clean it a couple times. 2 are completely healed & the 3rd looks much better. Hers was really infected though, it was huge!

I'very only been a chicken mom for about 2 yrs, so I'm not an expert. But this worked for me. I love my babies, theyre my pets & I couldn't bare seeing them suffer.

oh & fyi, if ur easily grossed out or tenderhearted, be warned. I had tears down my face the whole time I did the surgeries. But I'm glad I did it cuz the girls seem happier & funny thing, one of them was always really nervous around me cuz i got her when she was 2 already. She seems to trust me now despite hurting her. She doesn't run when I approach her :D

Hope any of this helps. Good luck!

Oh & I wanted to say, don't let it go cuz it will get worse & form a big ball on top of the foot & is harder to treat later. I read that they eventually die if ignored too :/

Yes! Your chicken definitely has bumblefoot. Don't panic though. The sore on your chicken's foot isn't currently life threatening and you have time to deal with it! A few days ago I had a chicken with a larger sore. I completed the foot surgery and wrapped it. I changed the wrap an hour ago and her foot is doing much better.

Anyhow, you have a couple different options. First, you can preform surgery on the foot (it's not as bad as it sounds) unless you feel that you are not up for it. The procedure involves taking a razor blade and tweezers and carefully removing the scab and deeper contents of the infection. Sometimes the wound can be very deep and the procedure becomes more like 'surgery' and less than tending a wound. Yet your chicken's bumblefoot isn't that far along and the infection most likely isn't very deep. Therefore, removing the scab wouldn't give you too much trouble. I recommend that before you remove the scab you give the chicken's feet (both feet) a 5-10 minute salt bath with aquarium or Epsom salt. This cleans the chickens feet so you do more good than harm. Detailed instructions for the foot surgery can be found here:

This site on BYC has pictures and detailed instructions on how to properly bath, removed the scabs, and wrap your chicken's foot. This should be very helpful as it was to me! Also, you can search 'Bumblefoot' in the search bar above in BYC too. There is some nice tips and info scattered across this site that was already posted.

If you're squeamish about preforming the surgery, you have another option. There is a medication called Tricide NEO which is typically used for Koi fish that can be used for Bumblefoot in chickens. It is a very potent chemical so be careful for how long you soak a chicken's feet in it and the exact solution you use. Give the bird's feet a salt bath first and mix the TN in a solution with DISTILLED WATER or you may not get the best results. Then soak the birds feet for 5-7 minutes and NO MORE remember that this is a potent medication!

I've found that this is a hard drug to find. I've found that people can acquire it through a vet or online. If you wish to buy this or know more about it you can go to

https://www.pondrx.com/products/16165.html

This has all the info you need. So you know... this is very expensive. And if you're willing to pay it and ship it from the website you may want to get the 110 gm packet instead of the 22 gm. You save money if you buy them together and if you see bumblefoot once you might get it again or might want to treat it more than once. 110 gm gives you 5 doses (5 gal.) and 22 gm only gives you one dose (1 gal.) unless you split the packets up. For now, that's all I can write about bumblefoot...

Hope this Helps!!! Hope your chicken gets better! And remember, it's always better to do something about bumblefoot than nothing!
