Hi all.
I have 7 hens that are about 24 weeks old located in Portland Maine. Should be cold hearty (buff orp, lav orp, 2 easter eggers, black copper maran, black astralorp, and a plymouth barred rock. This is my first flock, and of course my first winter. I have done plenty of research and I...
I have a 1 year old Brahma hen. When I sit outside with her and don't have socks or shoes on she will run up to my foot, freeze, and stare at it. The other day she did something even more strange though. While she was staring, her feathers slowly rose and she did a very quick and aggressive...
On of our hens (hatched this spring, out by a broody hen), was acting very odd last week. We were worried that she may be egg bound as she wasn't moving. Unfortunately, we observed her odd behavior as we were leaving for the airport for the week.
We came back, nervously afraid to find a very...
Texans are facing crushing physical and emotional emergencies. I would like to know what can be done to help you with your lack of clean water, safe heat and food?
With human suffering so intense it may seem naive to ask if you could use help with your flocks, but this is THE poultry site, so...
Here in central Texas were being hit with an Arctic freeze. I have a heat lamp, cayenne in the water, and lots of food for my chickens but at what temperature should I consider bringing them inside? I have 6 hens(3 buff orphingtons, 3 black sexlinks). I’ve read they’re cold hardy but we’re...
Hey! I just found out that we’re supposed to get snow in 7 days with a low of 21. I have 25 meat birds, and I knew I was cutting it close to the cold weather When I ordered them, but I wasn’t expecting it so soon. The only housing they have is a Joel Salatin style tractor, so it’s not totally...
I’ve been feeding my ten chickens 1/2 cup of scratch in the evenings since last fall when it was quite cold at night. I’ve continued this spring, unless it was to be over 50 degrees in the evening, simply because I still have some left over from the bag I purchased.
My husband noticed that...
I do not have electricity for my coop or run...
I have put out straw and hay in the run...
I have fine pine shavings in their coop...
I go out each day and toss each to keep it fluffed and not matted...
But tonight, it has dropped to 13 degrees...I have brought out warm to hot oatmeal each...
I have a flock of chickens, finally adults. However, this is my first time with my flock in winter. We are expecting to have piles of snow. I feel my little flock would freeze without warning.
What are your suggestions to keep your chickens all bundled up? They're mainly silkies, so I'm not too...
So I have been filling empty jugs and 2 liters for the up coming high heat coming the next couple of days. I do not have electricity in my coop. Too far from the house. So I figure ice packs the size of milk jugs should do nicely.
My chickens are 15 weeks old and I live in central Indiana. The heat indecies are in the low 100's for the past 3 days with a welcomed break coming hopefully tomorrow.
I was reading on another thread about feeding frozen treats on hot days (which I have been giving frozen watermelon) and...
