This is my absolute favorite method for fixing splay legs. I wanted to share, in case it may help someone else. It works well for both feather leg and clean leg chicks!
When you have a chick that is unable to stand or walk around properly within the first 24 hours, it can be very helpful to get...
I have a less than day old chick that hatched last night. The issue is that they have splayed legs, a possible deformity on both the stomach (which I am hoping is just leftover egg) and on the back of the metatarsus/knee, and may not have drank anything yet.
The chick, also known as Scooter, is...
I hatched 13 quail chicks last week, and most are perfectly healthy but one has been really struggling. They were born with severe splayed leg and haven't seen improvement after using hobbles and the cup method daily. Then this baby got wry neck 3 days ago, we've been treating with vitamin E...
Hello chicken community,
I am new to hatching baby chicks and need some expert eyes and advice on this new baby chick of ours.
**Note, this clutch was hatched out of obligation to our now deceased chicken who was sadly attacked by a dog. We later found her stash of eggs nearby our home and...
Hi everyone, I have a mallard duckling with protruding hips which causes him to keep his paws on top of each other when standing still.
He struggles to move and trips because of this malformation.
I hatched two broods inside a homemade incubator and three ducklings had crooked necks which I...
Hi all.
Not sure if I’m at the end of the line here but can’t seem to find any experience if this anywhere else online…
5 day old chick appeared to have curled toes and splayed leg on one leg (curled toes has rectified and I think the splay has mostly repaired.
The other leg was constantly...
Hey all,
My emu is close to 1 week old. I noticed that she doesn’t do as great of a job as my other one at keeping her legs under her and straight.
It’s not an obvious splayed leg, she walks and runs fine but I’m worried about long term.
I’ve splinted her legs together and they both have...
Hello. It’s my first time raising chicks. One of them developed splay leg but by the time I realized it she was already very weak from not eating enough. I hand fed her for couple days until she regained some strength and put a splint on her but she is still not walking very much. She can stand...
Hi peeps!:frow
about a week or two ago one of my guineas hatched out a horde of keets, and within the next hour and a half due to bad weather and other random disasters managed to lose about half of them then had a brain explosion after somehow managing to get them into my garden (which is quite...

Hello all, I’m a first time chick keeper here and had my first two eggs hatch out on Friday 5th. A Lavender Pekin and a Lavender Araucana. They seem to be eating and drinking ok, but the Araucana (15hrs younger still seems a bit wobblier and has a wider stance than its Pekin sister. I’m...
I just rescued a 5 week old chicken. They said he had untreated splayed leg however if it is, it is the worse splayed leg I’ve seen. Can you confirm diagnosis and is it too late for treatment?
I'm a first time duckling mom to 6 lovely ducklings. They are two weeks old today & straight out of the shipping box one was smaller and clearly weaker than the rest. She was also covered in green dye from the grow gel so I suspect since her legs were weak, she spent a lot of the trip at the...
Okay, I've been researching and I'm not sure this is the case or not. This little beauty had some issues hatching. It was 2 days since it pecked through and wasn't making any progress so I help it out of it's shell (I know but the membrane was stuck to it's head as you can see in the photos.)...
Hello All,
I am very new to chickens and chicks. Two days ago my first broody hen hatched 13 eggs. 11 are healthy and strong but 2 have issues with their legs. I read about splayed legs and have fashioned small “braces” for the two of them, however I am unsure if one may have a paralyzed leg...
Hi,
I have a 3 week old quail and I'm concerned about her legs (more her left leg though). Despite this, she is able to walk, run, jump and do everything that a normal chick can do. They appear to be splayed but not enough that it disables her. In this case, would it be necessary to seek...
Can you tell me what this is all about? I'm at a loss.
One of my quail chicks had splayed legs on day 1. Bandaged them like I've done to many other birds in the past. He is now 7 days old. Splayed legs are fixed.
Eats, drinks, poops fine. Hangs out and naps with the others fine BUT his...

Hi.
So here is the thing.
He is 2 days old. Legs straight out behind him. Curled toes.
Hobbled him. Did no good.
He can't keep his legs under him.
So I put him in a sling and hobbled again because he keeps pulling his legs up.
But his legs are still out behind him.
Need some more help/ideas...
