🥁🥁🥁... Two Fertile Eggs 😭

Second egg hasn't hatched yet but we're gonna leave it going and hope he pops overnight. Just sharing some cute pictures :) she's been hanging out with the family in the house today, gonna have to at some point break it to her she'll have to go in a brooder overnight... I love my birds but they don't get to sleep in my bed with me 🤣

I'm entirely crushed. Worst way to start a weekend, the baby just disappeared. Not in the brooder, not anywhere out of the brooder. I'm completely crushed. At this point I'm not sure the other egg is going to hatch, I'm not sure it's even pipped.

I have 2 dozen eggs to set but I'm just so low. I had this baby for just 8 hours after work snuggled in next to me on the couch on the heating pad, he was so quiet and relaxed but eager and curious and obviously adorable. And just poof. I hope whatever happened it was quick, I'm nauseous and sick thinking about it all and I barely want to set more eggs now

Oh, no. Check under and in the towel. I stopped using towels after a chick burrowed into one and died.

Seriously, they are amazingly good at finding creative and dumb ways to die.

Was it in the brooder when it disappeared? Do you have any pets that could have gotten it?

Yes she was in the brooder. The only animal who could have possibly had access would be our elderly cat, he hasn't tried hunting anything in years, he doesn't even like walking fast nowadays. He's at the point in his retirement he kind of just sleeps and complains for treats before sleeping again. It's definitely in the realm of possibilities, technically he's a cat and it was a baby quail, but knowing my cat it's just very unlikely, he was also sleeping in someone's bedroom that night. The room isn't very big, we moved everything in there under above below every item and just nothing. I've got i think 29 eggs to set though if this last egg is no good (checking it today, I think it's technically day 19?)

Just sort of putting a summary/ending on here I guess in case someone finds it in the future! We went ahead and pulled the last egg, it's many days past and no pip, no movement, no sound, floating showed no movement. I wrapped it in a towel & bagged it, put it in the freezer just in case there was anything alive I won't take the chance of throwing that in the trash can 😬

I have set more eggs, including the double yolker (for science!). I was actually able to see the yolks by candling in daytime light, the eggs fairly light colored so we can monitor it through this process. We rarely get double yolkers and the family is insanely curious just to see so I figured it can't hurt and I'll pull it if it isn't developing or does anything that might risk the rest of the eggs. I'll make a new thread close to hatching for the next group, I've been collecting eggs for about 2 weeks so some are gonna be older. 10 from my old hen, 20 from my young hen, + the double which is from the young hen. Hopefully better news in a week or two :)
