I'm posting this here instead of the "Other Poultry" thread because it might save someone trouble in the future. On the other BYC forum, I'd posted several times about my duck Button, who I raised in the house. Well, raising her in the house caused some problems that we didn't know about. When ducks, chickens, etc. are kept mostly in the house they don't get enough vitamin D. So, if you have inside birds, make sure you give them sunshine or vitamin D supplement.

Button's story - Before Thanksgiving my son had Button on our front porch and wanted to see if she could fly, which he knew she could, but 6 year olds being what they are, he did it while I was inside. He came in later and told me that she couldn't move. Her leg was broken. We didn't immediately take her to the vet (money, etc) but when we did she had to be taken to a surgeon. The bone was broken at the hip. While they were doing surgery the bone crumbled. After many trips from Waxahachie to Southlake (over 1hour each way), Button can stand, but the bone fused at her hip. Her leg is pretty much independent of her hip. So, she can get around, but she'll never be the same as she is with John in the picture on my avatar.

Good information to know!

I've read about the goose that laid the golden eggs, but i didn't know there were ducks that EAT them (with vet bills - ya know what I mean)

That is a good warning. It makes sense, just like we need supplements, or better yet, plenty of sunshine. Thanks! I've been raising my chicks in the garage, but I'll make sure they get some sun-time when the weather is suitable.

So sorry to hear about what happened to your duck. I'm glad that you were able to find vets to do the work to fix her up. And thank you for the information about vit D.
