I'm hoping this goes here. I'm about to buy a place and my husband says I can have a side side yard (wierd explanation sorry. It's a side yard attached to the side yard.) That's about 1.5 acres of land.

I'm used to doing free range but my husband says they have to stay in that area. I'm trying to see how many chickens, ducks, turkeys I can keep comfortably in this area. How many or big do I need to make the coops? This area will also have a few rabbit hutches for meat rabbits.

Lol. We lost a lot of poultry free range. So that's why I'm agreeing to it. They are technically still free ranging but in a safer area. It's my project hes just not wanting the mess on the porches again like we had before. Or our guests getting spooked by out turkeys just hoping for a mate ;)

My marriage is happy and we treat each other as equals.

This is the reason why I tend to stay away from this forum...
Crap like this is why Im longer married. I aint your maid, your property, or your slave. I am your partner. Make your own darn sandwich, you lazy, male chauvanistic pig.😝

its 10sq ft a bird in a run and 6 - 8 sq ft (in a coop). It depends on how much you want to give them? I live on 1/2 acre and have a 120 sq foot run and a 8x12 coop (open, connected to the run). The ladies haven't moved in yet but I have 7 girls. The more, the better they say.

Okay thank you. I'd have to look up how much sq feet that part of the yard is then. I don't want too many. But I do like hatching and raising my own meat too. I also want to put in a quail hutch but not too sure. We got a lot of feral cats that like to pull them through fencing and eat them

I have just shy of an acre for the “bird area” as he calls it. I can have as many birds in this area that comfortably and happily fit. It’s completely fenced off from the rest of the property. Almost completely ground predator proof. He said no livestock, damn it.

Over an acre is plenty of space to comfortably house 20+ hens, some turkeys and some other fowl basically free ranging. About 1/2 of my shy of an acre area doesn’t even get touched. I’m sure the emus will stretch their legs into the unused space, but it just shows that the area you’re considering using will be plenty of room for a bit of birds. We have two coops (1 large walk in coop with an outdoor run and 1 smaller coop that houses about 20 birds) and building a small pond for 8 ducks.

Good luck in your side yard’s side yard!
