I had a 7 week old CX die yesterday and one that I don't think will make it through the night. The one that is sick is breathing very hard and his comb is a darker shade then the other 11. Apparently nothing was wrong at 3:00 pm today but at 6:00 he would not move much and was was breathin very hard. I was not home, the wife fed them tonight. He was still alive but the same condition at 9:30. If any body has any suggestions I would appreciate them.

Thank You
Wes

Maybe heatstroke? If their getting to hot during the day that could kill them. Sorry I'm not more help.

meat birds are prone to things like that, that is why they say to butcher them early. we do ours at 8 weeks, sometimes sooner if they are very large. they just eat while they are laying down, and don't move much. the heat is not good for any chicken.

I withhold food for 12 hrs and it has been very cool for 4 days now(60's days and 50's nights) I went out a few mins ago and he had moved into the tractor for the night but was still breathing hard andhis comb was still much darker then the others. They have had plenty of water and emps have been down so I not sure. It could just be one of those things that happen. It is just stange that it has happened two days in a row. I going to butcher all that are large tomorrow after work. Do you think this could be some type of diesease?

First time with poultry and still having fun

Thank You
Wes

I'd say that it's probably not a disease- if anything maybe a heart issue. Personally, if he's acting the same at butcher time, I'd have no issue with eating him.
