I lost one of my hens the other day. Fine on Easter and the next day just sitting in the coop door way, next day she died in my hands. I noticed when I picked her up She had no breast meat. I cleaned the coop and hen yard, added Corid to their water. The other 3 seemed fine. Foraging, eating, drinking. I noticed that my Plymouth seemed not interested in the treats my husband gave them, although the other 2 jumped on them. I picked up the Plymouth and her breast bone seemed to be protruding as did my Rhode Island, not plump as usual. Hen yard clean and dry, coop clean and dry. NO RUNNY poop and they are drinking. Not sure what else to do or if at this point just wait and see. Any suggestions?

How old are they?
What type of food/treats do you feed?

I'm sorry for your loss.

If you have a vet that can test a fresh poop sample for Cocci and worms that would be a good idea.

Does her crop seem to be functioning well - full at night and empty in the morning before eating/drinking?
If she is old enough to lay eggs, has she had any problems - soft shell, shell-less eggs, etc.?
Any swelling/bloat of the abdomen?

Drinking is good, so hopefully she will continue to do that. Add some poultry vitamins to the water or direct dose her with something like Poultry Nutri-Drench (1cc per 3lbs of weight). Offer her some extra protein like egg or tuna.

Let us know how she's doing.

She's approx 11 months old. just dried worms, and scratch. My Rhode Island had lost weight as well but seems to be putting it back on her breast. My Plymouth still has not gained any weight back but is foraging, eating her food and drinking water that I have Probiotic in. She seemed to have lost feathers in the coop so I would guess she is molting. She did lay 4 eggs in before thanksgiving but not since then. No curious poop anywhere in the chicken yard or coop. Coop clean and dry. I will check in with the vet tek at Costal to see what he suggests. Thankyou

theres still some more important questions that were asked, what do you feed them daily? have you tried feeling their crops in the evenings to see if they are full? if you dont already, it may be a good idea to give them a few handfuls of cracked corn scattered on the ground for them to scratch around for before bed. it is good for putting on weight
