building a new cage, and just wondering if 1 foot is tall enough?
this is going to be my first cage, going to have a mix of jumbo's and Italians
it is also 2 feet deep and 6 feet wide.

Disclaimer is I have researched but have no experience. My state laws are very anti-quail with fines and jail for not not having all the permits and being in compliance. I was starting construction when I discovered all the legal roadblocks. So take this with a grain of salt.....

From what I read a 20” height is good. The number of birds is based on space with 1sf/ bird being the minimum and anything over 2sf is just extra. That 1 to 2sf number is internal open space and things like feeder, water, dust bath is taken out of the overall. So 12sf outside measurements is closer to 10sf for the birds. They also say if kept outdoors to have an enclosed section to get out of the weather. The enclosed section should also meet the 1sf/bird rule. So a 2’x6’ essentially becomes two 2’x3’ sections so now you’re re down to 4 or 5 birds. My design was 2.5’x8’x20” with a 3’ wide enclosed section and a 5’ wide open section. The intended flock was 6 birds. Your mileage may vary and those with experience will have better insight.

My inexperienced suggestion is to build bigger or limit the flock to just a few hens. But take it for what it’s worth.

If you have jumbos, 12 inches might be tight for mating. Mine are standard and I have some plastic bins I use as houses and hides and 10” is short enough that the hens go inside to keep males off them.

Yes, one foot is tall enough for Coturnix.
I prefer about 18".

the Hight ended up around 14" since i had the wire on the outside of the wood planks, so it is a bit more roomier. in this flock i will be mixing mostly Italian (5 weeks old) females.... since my male to female ratio in my jumbos (7 weeks old) is mostly males.... ahg.

I will be building another cage for my pure jumbos, they are too young to sex atm(only 2-3 days old), but there is around 25 chicks of them.... hopefully i get a better ratio with the pure ones.
Thanks peeps!
