Well, we moved our last hatch (still some guinea eggs in the bator for a Mennonite farmer), into the coop today for "see no touch" time. It has been raining today, with a little wind. I blocked the wind, checked on them Often, neither Adults (just 1 yr) nor pullets ( -8 weeks) care or have any interest in them. Yea!
They (today 1 month) have been w/o heat for a week in a room with temp at 67 for 4 days. I have the electric cords ready to run outside, in advance to prepare, but have decided not to plug in MHP. It should be about 62 overnight and there are 15 of them, I'm thinking body heat and they are feathered. I just locked down their coop, they are not huddled together, not fluffed up, roosting on perches or in straw...relaxed. As per a few members, whose opinion I respect, I think they will be fine, as the last bunch, who were only 2 days older and temp 6-7 degrees cooler. They have plenty of straw bedding, are calm, not chirping and appear ready to sleep for the night. Now of course, I will check them at dawn, but I am good with it. Thank you BYC for teaching me. Into my third year and loving the chickens. My husband, a True friend, built us (really he did it for me) a second larger coop. Shhh, don't tell him, I have plans for a third one next spring.
