I have a 1 month old Welsummer chick that has been sick for going on a week now.

1. First symptom was blood in her poop. Not diarrhea, just red poop.

Since I was thinking cocci I got some corrid and have been top dressing her feed with
this as all Wilco had was the 10 lb. bag of calf pellets or the gallon bottle of concentrate
($89). No dosing for chickens on the label.

The blood stained poop got better and her poops all looked like normal chicken poop
until I stopped the corrid then this horrible, fetid, tar-y looking poop came. Don't know
if the smell was from the corrid or not but it was awful and only came after I stopped
the medicine. Since I was thinking maybe the cocci was still present I started the corrid
again and she is on it now.

Up until today she was the only chick with blood tinged stool.

2. In the meantime, while she was dealing with this she woke up one morning with her
right eye glued shut and making these little, quiet sneezes. Her eyes were both
watery and she had a slight nose sniffle. I haven't taken her temp but when she
sits on my shoulder (I have had her indoors in a crate since this started) she feels
really hot. There is no smell to her breath or the mucous and while she is on the corrid
her poop smells and looks just like regular chicken poop.

She has been holding her own, not getting worse but not getting better, until last
night. While we were watching NCIS (yes, the bird and I), she had a few spells of
beak-open gasping breaths. After a few of those her breathing went back to normal.

Up until today she is the only chick out of 35 that has had symptoms. This morning while out in the pen with the other 34 I noticed one of them poop the blood colored poop. Not diarrhea, just red poop. My avian vet is out until Tuesday and Wilco is 1 1/2 hours away. Also, because of the mish mash of symptoms I don't know if I would know what to give her even if I could get over there.

Anybody got any ideas?

Can you post a picture of their poop, that would really help. I would also try to find someone by you that has either the powdered or liquid Corid. Try calling anyone that raises chickens or cattle. While you're at it, see if you can find an antibiotic just in case.

Thanks, Kathy.

I will try to do that.

I'm sorry but I cannot find my camera right now, as hard as I try. I know pictures are always helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

I have no idea what Corrid does but I've had a chicken that ate something sharp once. He survived the initial haemorrhaging which was very similar to what you described, but a few months later went back to blood poops and died.

The sudden gasping could be symptomatic of many things including pain. I think if a chicken's eaten something sharp and poops blood that isn't watery/non-coagulated, there's a chance it can live because the clotting is able to work, therefore possibly healing, but if it's consistently pooping blood that's not clotted you wouldn't be as likely to have a good outcome. But your chook may be doing what it's doing for another reason. Best wishes, hope you find out and are able to fix it.

Corid is for coccidiosis. She may or may not have it. There was no diarrhea, just the blood tinged poops. The other really confusing thing was the upper respiratory cold-like symptoms. I don't think cocci and respiratory stuff usually go together.

Thank you, chooks4life, for your reply. I hope this is not the same think as you experience.

She was in with her sibs in an enclosed pen in our garage but now that I think of it a garage would be just the place for something sharp to get into the pen. Well, for now I'm going to not worry about that and hope the Corid works on the bottom and wait till Tuesday to get some antibiotics for the top! She isn't getting any worse for now. Mainly just the watery eye and little tiny sneezes.

At any rate, I have a partner to watch NCIS reruns with...

Coccidiosis will open the door for other opportunistic infections, so maybe that's what going on.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle!!!! I never even thought of that but it makes perfect sense.

Kathy, with one sentence you have cleared up my confusion. I guess I've been having a week of senior moments.

Thank you AGAIN!
