Hello all,
I first time chick owner and wanting to do things correctly. I have 4 2-week old baby chicks (red sex links) of which one was gasping for air and stretching its neck upward. Based on their post I thought it could be brooder pneumonia so I got her separated, mouth fed a drop of nutrí drench, and water with probiotics. She was refusing to eat but did perk up when giving her wet chick starter. Her poop was loose and occasionally just plain liquid, no solids. Within 12 hours I did not notice any change and decided to take her to the vet. The vet has put her on antibiotics (clavamox, I believe) and an oxygen box and has noticed her neck stretching to go down. I plan to bring her home once she is fully off of oxygen and continue with prescribe treatment. Their diagnosis was possible cocci given the symptoms and what has worked so far.
I will continue to isolate and give the single chick her treatment but had a few questions in changing my setup, feed, additional nutrients for the rest of the flock (3). Chicks have been set up in a stock stank and still keep their light on 24/7. Pine shavings, elevated watered and feeder.
Questions:
1) I did not realize I had been feeding unmedicated feed. Based on the TSC employee, he set me up for all they were going to need and suggested dumor 20% chick starter. Should I make the change to medicated feed or continue with what I have till 18 weeks?
2) is there anything additional I should be providing to the rest of the flock in their water? Probiotics? Electrolytes? Nutrí drench?
3) suggested medication for cocci is corid. Am I fine to give the 3 chicks corid? Should this be done for the isolated chick as well?
