We just brought home two bantam one week old chicks, They were active and peeping eating and drinking on the way home which was a 5 hour drive. They rode in a shoe box with shavings, water and feed in the heated van.

THey are now in a brooder when I first put them in they ate a bit and drank some water. Now three hours later they are laying on their stomachs with their necks stretched out. They have gotten up a few times since doing this and I've seen one of them drink

They are in a brooder 94 degrees with a 250 watt heat lamp water wiht a bit of sugar and chick starter.

Is it normal for them to be splayed out on their stomachs with their necks stretched out?

Are you sure they aren't too hot? They will spread themselves out and hold their wings away from there body if they are too warm. Do they have some place where they can escape the heat from the heat lamp if they are too warm?

thank you so much for the reassurance.

I'm pretty sure they aren't too hot. they are laying directly under the lamp the brooder box is 4 by 2 feet and the lamp is on one side I think they could walk away from the heat

of course since I"ve never had chickens before its hard to tell
