Hello,
I'm a new member to the forums. I have a question. I will try and explain in as much detail as possible.
I have 5 hens in my flock. 3 ( 1year old ) ISA Browns ( LAYING ) and 2 Barr Rock Pullets just introduced ( approximately 5 months old ) Had been in isolation for 2 months with no sign of illness

One of my year old laying hens laid yesterday morning as normal. Last evening while I was carrying her to put her in the coop for the evening she laid a yolk??? She had already laid that morning. Today I found she had not laid. Now this evening about 2 hours before dark she lays a membrane and yolk in the yard???
Over all health of the flock seems to be good. She appears to be healthy and foraging with the other birds.
These birds eat 18% protein feather fixer made by naturemade. They also have on occasion cracked corn used as scratch. They are allowed to forage the majority of every day. They have oyster shell and grit available 24/7 in their coop. Also water is available in multiple places on the property where they forage. At least once a month I add probiotics and electrolytes to their water.
Temperatures here are very hot. Mid 90's with high humidity.
1st - Is she sick?
2nd - If so what can I do?
3rd - If this is normal what is causing it?

Thanks

Wow, strange. I don't know for sure and I'm definitely not the most well versed person in this subject, but I can try :)
Does she have access to oyster shells or some other kind of calcium? To lay eggs with thick and hard shells they need lots of calcium. Is she molting? Sometimes the chickens laying cycles get pretty weird when they're molting.
I'd call the local grange, they usually can answer any questions like this. Just watch for signs of illness.
Best of luck!!

Yes she has access to oyster shells. As far as melting I'm not sure. These are my first chickens and I have raised them from pullets. They have never molted that I know. That being said I have not seen them losing feathers.
not sure what you mean by the local grange

The grange or local feed store, or from where you got the birds. They can answer questions....google as well :)

I am new chicken mom too. My 2 oldest are 15 months. One being a speckled Sussex. I live north of New Orleans and it is very hot here as well. My whole routine is the same as you other than I feed organic starter. I had the same thing happen to Lola yesterday. I hope someone can give us direction. I did read you can crush up a tums and give to her so I did that tonight on some shredded lettuce and watermelon. Hope your baby does okay.

It might have something to do with the heat as you both are having the same problem....hope your chickens do well! I wish chickens were more resilient, I love my girls so much and I'm always worrying about them :(

My babies have no idea what the real world would look like. We must be kindred souls because I'm always worrying too. We just love them to pieces. We go to Sam 's club and buy shredded lettuce for them. Lol. So hope you thinking about the heat is the answer. Thank you.

Been doing some more reading and I do see it can be caused by stress. Of course there is lots of other reasons as well.
I did introduce the two pullets the same day this happened, also the heat has been almost unbearable.
Hopefully it is just that. Any other thoughts?

Makes me feel a little better that someone else has experienced this as well. I love my Vet but he will tell you right away he is no help with chickens. Wish he was.

Yeah, we pamper ours as well. All of ours are named. Emily is the one having the issues. Varina, Sara, Jemima and Little Bit are the others.
