First off make sure the kids wash their hands well before and after handling chickens. Second no not allow them to kiss the birds or hold them close to their face (Chickens peck at shiny things like eyeballs).

Since one of your babies has a life threatening heart condition - ask your doctor if you should have chickens at all.

Hello! I am fairly new to backyard chicken. I have 9 hens 1 rooster(by accident). I LOVE chickens but went overboard I only wanted 5 to begin with anyways. I recently read online that our backyard pet chickens can make humans sick? This breaks my heart and almost feel like finding new homes for most my girls. What is the likihood that something like that can happen? Because I worry big time because I have a 5 and 2 year old and we hold our chickens ALL THE TIME. And keeping them healthy is my main priority in life especially since one of my babies has a life threatening heart condition.
Anyways I am happy to be apart of this lovely backyard chickens family and hoping to learn more about raising my girls ❤
