My Coop
My Coop
Hi guys! Had something strange happen last night. When I went out to put the girls to bed and lock their coop up for the night. Ginger (the 10 week old golden comet) wasn't in her usually place on the roost. The Queen was there instead. She was laying in the pine under the roost. This morning, when I went to let them out, they were all on the roost, and Ginger was in one of the nest boxes. She must have slept there all night cuz there was poop in it. My daughter and I are questioning, if the Queen kicked her off the roost and she felt ousted, would she all of a sudden feel like she didn't belong and go find a lower place to sleep? Ie the nest box? She is fine this morning, they are all getting along and acting normal, and when I left them they were all snuggling together. I don't want her to get used to sleeping in the nest boxes, I did have it blocked off, but the two oldest ones were showing signs of interest, so I took it out so they could explore. They are two weeks older than Ginger. Should I put the partition up again? Or wait and see what happens tonight? I have also heard that Golden comets start laying earlier than normal, so could this be part of that? ( I know she's way too young to lay now, but maybe prepping for it?) Thanks guys!

I would leave the nest boxes open and if she attempts to sleep there again then physically put her on the roost to keep her from getting in the habit of sleeping in the nest box. They're creatures of habit and sometimes we have to guide them in the direction of habits that are in their best interest. Chicken Mom duty.;)

Thank you, do you think it was because the Queen wanted her spot on the roost?
