11 hens and 1 roo?

Back in the spring I got a dozen guinea's. I was out there this morning looking them over to see if I can tell if they are male/female. It looks to me like I have 11 hens and 1 roo. There is only 1 with long wattles, the rest all look the same. Forget trying to listen to them, they all make the same sound.... I never heard the one with the big wattles make a sound.

Is this too many hens? Should I try to get another male? I would be willing to re-home some of the females if necessary.

I would get more males. Mine always pair off.

Are they being kept in a pen or free ranged? The wattles are not a definite way to tell, but they are a good indication. The females should be making the "buck-wheat" call by now and it is a definite way to tell them apart. If you are letting them free range then I would get some more males as they tend to pair off in the breeding season. If you were to rehome the females you should not have a problem, most people are always trying to get rid of excess males.

Sadly, I decided to post them on Craigslist today. I realized I bit off more than I can chew. I woke up this morning to 1 dead guinea and 1 missing. So now I have 9 hens and 1 roo. I'm disappointed because all I have done is worry about them, and feed them. It's costing me a fortune in food. Not to mention that the whole reason we wanted to move out here to the country was for the peaceful atmosphere, which they completely destroy noise-wise. I'm quite certain they bother my neighbor, who would never tell me they do....

Wish me/them luck in re-homing them and taking one thing off my to-do list!

Wish you were in PA, I would take all of them. Mine follow me around wherever I go. On the tractor, up in the woods, down by the stream, everywhere. My posse watches out for me!
