All in the same box, all the time! What is it about that one end box on the top row?? There were 5 of them this morning all trying to lay at the same time. Stepping on each other, smooshing each other, GOOD GRIEF! It is so funny! There are so many of them in there at once sometimes, it is hard to tell how many there is! It's like--which head belongs to which back end, and whose legs are those??
I have always used pine shavings, but since I got these new mature laying RIR's, they used hay at their old house, so I started using hay...I think I like it better!

I was afraid the answer would be "on the ground"

So they are at least better than that! I bet it is funny to watch. Mine are the same way. I just got rid of my nest boxes and left a large, covered shelf almost, with hay. They have about 2ft by 3ft of room - - yet they hollowed out one spot towards the left back corner and all the girls to there! Silly hens

Mine all lay in one box also, silly chickens. We use old cat litter boxes, so they literally wait in line. And never touch the other box. I wonder if I put a golf ball in there if they would lay there?

Such a cool photo! Thanks for sharing it! That must be funny, like ladies waiting in the restroom line after a movie! LOL
I put a fake egg in each box, so we will see if it makes a difference!
