I have a faverolle hen named Bolt. I hatched her last spring, and she's very sweet and healthy. Faverolles are one of the five-toes breeds of chicken, so she should have ten toes total as opposed to the usual eight. Now, I'm like 90% sure that she had five toes on each foot when she was born. But I while I was checking for bumblefoot on all my ladies, I realized that one of her toes looked funny. And that's because...she has an extra! Her fifth toe on one foot is very short and stubby, and splits off at the joint. Each mini toe has a nail and everything, too. Is this going to be an issue for her? Will I have to cut her nails or something? Does anybody know why this happened? I swear she was born with only ten, but even if she wasn't, how does a chicken just casually grow an extra appendage? I'm so confused. Any ideas? bolt11.jpg

Looks like she's polydactyl.
That fifth toe gene is weird. My SF rooster threw it 50/50 on his first batch of chicks. There were three chicks. One had 5 toes on both feet, one had 4 toes on both feet, and one had 5 on one and 4 on the other.

Interesting. I have one of these girls too. I am going to have to get a closer look at her. Sammy Jo has mucho feathering around her feet now. She is not aggressive but she does not like being held like my other hens even though I made sure I gave each one time as chicks lol. When selecting her from the breeder I did not read that this breed normally has more toes. I just loved all the other traits. She also does not follow us even with food like the others. I have to get right up on her and shew her in run more. At first I thought she was deaf but she responds to other things. Miss independent.
