Hello i have read quite a few threads here and it seems this is a symptom of many illnesses with chickens. Well, my situation is i have a 12 week old red longhorn how for the passed two days has just laid in one spot with her feathers ruffled, eyes closed. She isn't breathing hard, and i have checked every inch of her body for parasites, and anything out of the ordinary. She is colder then the other chicks in the coop and lets me handle her very easily with no hesitation. There are five other chicks of the same age. She was running around fine on thursday and i noticed this new behavior yesterday. i have gotten her to drink some water but not eat. I am new to this and i want to do everything in my power to help her to survive. I am going to go get a probiotic that mixes in water and hope that will help since she will drink. I have separated here from the rest of the flock. the bedding is pine shavings and i am still feeding them the starting feeder that i got when i first got them. The feeder is medicated. All the other chicks are doing fine running around, scratching, chasing bugs, and me when i come to the coop. How do i get her to eat? i have pics included but its just of her laying there. i was going to take her to a vet but they want 200 bucks just for me to bring her in, i havent found any vets specializing in chickens around my area. Anything will help! thank you to everyone who responds in advance. ok, its been about an hour or so and i have now seen that her poop is a yellow/greenish color. she spilled some of her feed before going on it. that is also in the pic. a pic of this is below.

i having the exact same issue........cant seem to find out anything.....but my silkie is 9 weeks old she lays in one spot..will let me hold her with any resistance ......

It looks like it may be coccidiosis, even though she is on the medicated feed. I had this happen to me last year. What I did....I got some Corid and gave my birds that instead of the medicated feed. If it is just the one bird with the problem I would separate her and treat her with the Corid in her drinking water.

Thank you, i did talk to several people today, one a vet. She did say it is also more likely coccidiosis and told me to start her on sulfadimethoxine. Its made by Agrilabs and is DI-METHOX. I had to go to another county to get it but Southern States had some. I am breaking down the conversion ratios so i can add to there water since one pack goes to 50 gallons of water and i only have 6 girls and a fresh stock has to be prepared daily. Once i break it down ill repost for those with a need. Thank you for replying. ill post as this goes along.

I would do the meds for everyone, but since this one is feeling so bad, if you can give her some extra TLC, go for it. You can make sure she drinks the medicated water - dip the tip of her beak in a little water cup and make her drink if she doesn't seem like she wants to. Just don't dip her beak so far that the liquid goes over her "nostrils."

I would also give her a couple drops of NutriDrench direct with a dropper, and add that to everyone's water after the treatment is done, too, since cocci meds can deplete vitamins.

I do the "Spa Treatment" http://hencam.com/faq/the-spa-treatment/ almost any time I have one that feels crummy [if the chicken already has runny or watery stool, though, I don't do the olive oil but rather just use plain yogurt - the beak dipping works with yogurt if necessary]

Plain scrambled eggs [no spices, no milk] is one food that most will go for, even if they're not feeling too hot. If one of mine is sickly and refuses the scrambled eggs, then I know we are in trouble. If she refuses the eggs, and hasn't eaten anything, she needs a kick start to boost her up. You can make a slurry of her regular food, a couple drops of molasses or karo syrup, and warm water in a small dish for her - just mix in water enough to make it a thick liquid and do the beak dipping if she doesn't want it on her own.

I hope she bounces back!

Thank you all for the comments. Unfortunately she passed last evening. She did drink some of the meds but died 20 mins later. All the others are doing fine so far. I have started them in the meds just to be safe. The vet said she will test the bird for me. Might as well to make positively sure. Good luck to you all, and thank you all on BYC.

I am so sorry for the loss of your bird. I am glad you are having her tested though. This will tell you why and if there are any other concerns for the rest of your flock.
