Hi all,
We have two 12 week old Silkies. One is white and looks a lot like a hen as she has a huge mound of fluffy white on her head and she is very small and petite. This blue one (below) is at least 1/3 if not more larger than the white one, and I've photographed the comb. It is a bearded one and doesn't have a huge wattle. We haven't had any crowing. It does act a bit bossy and always has done so, but not in any way aggressive - just pack leader sort of stuff where the others follow it. It is currently almost the same size as our other hens who are the same age: a barred rock, brahmas, wyandottes etc.
We got it from MyPetChicken/Meyer so it isn't a breeder/show chicken and it has some feathers on its body that aren't "silky" but are regular. Is that a sign of a roo or just a less-than-show quality Silkie?
Thanks for your input!!

and here is the white by comparison. I guess she does have something of a comb, but it is very hidden in there. She has a large wattle but I understand that non-bearded Silkies have large wattles and beared (like our blue) have small combs.

Both roosters
Seriously? I didn't think the white looked like a rooster at all! I really would be amazed if she was. We bought both as sexed Silkies (hens obviously), and the white one is very small and ladylike in her behavior. I was posting that one as a comparison. I hope you're not right lol!!!!

Both are cockerels. Where did you get silkies that were supposedly sexed?
OK well I am so sad they are BOTH roos!!!! I really wasn't expecting that. We do have a third, younger one. Hopefully that will be a hen. We got them from MyPetChicken.com who I understand gets their stock from Meyer, but MPC does the sexing. I believe they refund for wrongly sexed chicks, but I'll wait until we get a crow or definite lack of eggs before I contact them.

Maybe they accidentally shipped straight run? If they crow hopefully you will get your refund with no problems. They charge an extra $8 for sexed pullets, don't they?

Yeah I have no idea how it happened! Yes, it is an extra $8 per Silkie. The money doesn't bother me as much as not having hens!! I thought it was well worth the extra money to ensure we got females. Oh well. We still love them.

The blue is definitely a boy, and yes, I am suspect on the white also. I would go ahead and send the pics to MPC and see what they say. They might just go ahead and send you replacements now so you don't have to wait as long to integrate if you can keep them. The boys are generally super sweet, so if you can keep roos, I would do it!

Well, I have an update! Our blue boy is crowing away like a crazy old rooster! We probably have to rehome because he is too loud for our neighborhood, even though we can keep roosters technically. He is trying to mount our white girl, and I would assume he would know best and that she is a hen. That would be a reasonable assumption right? She isn't having any of it and clucks and scurries away, but he has tried repeatedly and appears more interested in her than any of the other hens. So - my final qu on this topic (since there are still no eggs or crowing from the white one to confirm) - a rooster would only try to mount a hen right? They don't get confused or anything lol?!
