I posted on this a few days ago, but I think my post was buried. We have a 10 mo mixed breed OE pullet that has been laying med-large eggs for about 5 mo; no giant eggs or other predisposing problems. Three days ago, we saw that she had prolapsed and it had been mildly pecked. We brought her into our garage and today is the second day of 8 hr of light per day and restricted food (eggshells, grit, few berries, clover, kefir for probiotics). She’s been laying her egg ok, but it got stuck today until soaked in an Epsom salt bath. The prolapse wouldn’t stay in, so I put some sutures in yesterday with stretchy bands connecting to keep her prolapse in overnight, then opened the rubber bands this morning so she could lay. Also gave her 50 mg/kg Oxytetracycline subcutaneously yesterday after suture placement.
As expected, she prolapsed again trying to lay today. After her soak, I rinsed the prolapse well with the Epsom salt water and saw that these white and yellow plaques were no better. I’ve tried to debride them everyday but the mucosa bleeds when I try too hard. I am guessing that the plaques are at the opening of the oviduct into the cloaca. I got more aggressive today and got more of the plaque off but about 1/2 is still there. I’ve saved a sample of the plaque and may be able to submit to our diagnostic lab Monday to see if it’s heavy in bacteria or yeast, but am wondering if a should get athletes foot cream onto the prolapse in the meantime?
Prolapse is now reinserted and rubber band seems again to be holding it in for now, but I expect it will keep prolapsing until she stops laying.
