Here's a fun one - eight feral Hawaiian chicks

We rounded up some eggs from four different feral chicken nests and incubated them. So far we have eight. Five more are due soon. To make this game even more fun, from what I've read, Hawaiian feral chickens can be straight up mixes of domestic chickens that got loose or were dumped, or some mix of that plus South East Asian jungle fowl. 🤔

So they're almost certainly all crazy mixes, but I'm curious if it is possible to tell what breed they might kind of resemble based on their appearance as chicks.

This is my love, Roxie. Not all pics are recent. She still looks very similar though, just a little bigger. Hatched April 8.

These three all hatched 4/20. The one with the light colored beak tip is from a separate nest from the other two. The smallest one (on the right in the third pic) despite how it looks here is actually slate gray, the only one we have like that. It's got a ridged beak! Hatched that way. You can clearly see it in this pic. Is that weird?

Piper (with the yellow, looked a bit like Roxie back then) and Winnie (darker), giant feet). These hatched March 31. I need some better recent photos! Been busy with the others still hatching (along with some fallen baby mynahs) and the kids mostly take these out and spend time with them.

ETA: I did find a few more recent pics of Winnie. #5 and #6 below.

And last but not least, Sage and Pepper. I believe they both hatched very early April. Can't recall the exact date at the moment. I think the markings on Sage are just gorgeous. Looks similar to the blondie that hatched yesterday that I posted a pic of above.

I'm realizing I don't have a great pic of Pepper, but he's similar to Roxie and Piper.

The ridged beak isn't the beak, it's a single comb. And it's perfectly normal. Most feral chickens on Hawaii are an eclectic mix of chickens, usually with some game origin. I believe they are almost considered their own Landrace breed now.
