I let one of my broody hens hatch a barred rock egg (dad is an EE) because I thought it would be sex-linked. The chick had a spot on his head, so it should be a boy, right? However, he is now just over two weeks old and his feathers are coming in solid black, not barred. If I look closely I can see some lighter grey on the edges of his feathers, kind of like lacing, or maybe really really subtle barring.

Is my chick a boy? Did my sex-linking experiment get messed up because of the mystery genetics of my EE? (He's not barred, but not solid colored either.)

Thanks guys!

Um, maybe?
If the Easter Egger father is not barred, then the sex-linking "should" work.
I would expect the same thing you expected, so I'm just as puzzled as you are :)

I see you posted this some time ago--has the chick gotten visible barring since then? Or is the gender obvious yet?

Yes, the barring became obvious after a few more weeks. He is in a batch of chicks that have taken forever to feather out. His first feathers on his wings are still solid dark gray, but his body is barred. He had other pronounced boy features before his feathers came in, so the whole sex-link idea didn't work as well as I thought it would. I'll know for next time I guess :).

Thanks for updating!

Funny that he had the headspot, and eventually had the barring, but was confusing for a while in the middle. Yes, at least you'll know for next time :)
