Hi, I'm new to raising chickens-this is our first flock. We're wanting to start free ranging. We have 14 pullets and 1 cockerel-we got them as day old chicks from Meyers Hatchery.
2 days ago, My kids noticed our cockerel was limping and standing on one leg for most of the day. The next day he rarely got up. I had to carry him out of the coop and take him to his food and water and then he laid around all day. He was able to walk himself into the coop at dusk-but again didn't come out with the girls this morning.
I have brought him in our house. He's in a box with some food and water. He is just laying there and quiet- but kind of whining (if chickens whine.) He's barely eating and not drinking much. His eyes look fine. no signs of an obvious broken leg. no sores on feet or any where else I can see.
I have to admit, I've really grown attached to this little guy. He has a great disposition, very docile. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
