18 wk old Barred Rock Rooster still not crowing is that normal?

Just curious, Owen, my Barred Rock Rooster is 18 wks old and still shows no sign of crowing. He makes little chirpy bird sounds very softly, is this normal? And yes he is without a doubt a rooster.

Most likely he is just a late crower, or maybe he is not dominanat? Do you have any other roosters in the coop? If you do, he may not crow due to pecking order. OH and... The reason I am saying this is I have a serama rooster and a barhama rooster in the same pen and the serama lets my other guy walk all over him and he also never crows only peeps. RECENTLY we moved him in with some new hens all to himself and the day after he crowed constantly. We then moved him back becuause we got a better rooster for those hens and he stopped crowing lol. Any help is appreciated. And he is the only Rooster I have. He is pretty timid and he has just started sticking up for himself. He used to let the girls walk all over him. My 2 New Hampshire's are the only 2 hens he backs down from now.

You are lucky to have a sweet quiet rooster, unless you wanted him as protection for your flock. Most roosters are pretty aggressive to people and sometimes other chickens. I used to have a polish rooster who would always try to attack me, that was one of the main reasons I gave him away. He sounds like a sweet boy, could you post a picture of him when you get the chance?

Here is my boy. He is a sweetheart. I did not get him for protection, his main purpose is for breeding. He does make a very low Rrrrrrr Rrrrrrr whisper along with his little chirpy sounds.. Is that the beginning first stage of crowing?

He is very beautiful! I am sure that he will start crowing when he is ready. And when he does you will probably miss his cute little chirping sounds.

People should not keep nor breed human aggressive roosters from breeds that are supposed to be docile. So glad to hear your rooster is sweet. Rocks should be calm and good natured.

As for when they crow. It ranges almost as much as when hens lay. Some start as young as 11 weeks and some as late as 28 weeks. Some crow 20 times a day and some just once or twice. Often once they crow, they crow a ton at first and then back off to a more reasonable amount.

I thought I did answer what you asked. He is the only rooster I have. He is not at the top of the pecking order. He is usually the first to back down when he is approached by the girls. He isn't one to start anything with any of them.

Update:
Well Owen not starting things with his little hens has changed. Even though it has only been a few days he is on a roll. He will run up to the girls and fluff his feathers, neck feathers all standing straight out and stands up straight to all of them. Randomly he will run up and give them a peck and they run away. Doesn't seem to try to hurt them just showing who's in charge is my guess. Still the only ones that do not take anything from him are my New Hampshire's. And my poor little chihuahua, he chases her everywhere.
