Okay. Locking down tonight, first time hatching. I have an LG still air incubator with no turner. 8 eggs in, and after candling, 7 0f 8 show vascularization. They have been in a cut-down egg carton the whole incubation period to prevent rolling. I filled the water wells, and placed a wet kitchen towel underneath the ventilation hole so I can use a syringe to moisten it to keep humidity up. I lined the wire bottom with the shelf lining paper to make it easier for the little fuzzies to run around after.

My question is this....the egg carton i used was so soggy that it collapsed....so before I officially lockdown, I nede to figure out what im doing. Which works better in your experience? A cut down egg carton with eggs slightly pointed down? or just laying them sideways on the shelf paper? I've seen both ways used on threads on here...but my concerns are : when in the carton do the hatched chicks step on the other eggs because its too crowded? or do the hatched chicks roll the pipped eggs causing chick mortality on the paper??

Geez, all good questions. My first time too and just now entered lockdown. Mine are in cut-down shallow egg carton sections. Just candled them for the last time and after 2 power outages I have what appears to be a lot of quitters. I really only see 2 out of 16 that are still viable. Those I saw movement, so I guess, 2 is better than none! Still pretty excited! And if I spend any more time on BYC my boyfriend is gonna kill me.

Good luck to you!

Same here, we had a power outage day 15...so I'm really hoping that they didn't quit on me! MY husband doesn't understand BYC either.

Either way, I know I have a good fertility rate and plan on setting some more eggs after this hatch!

Its just killing me trying to decide cartons, or no cartons! lol

I, too, just entered lockdown for the first time. I layed mine on their side the whole time, and turner them by hand. I started out with 24, but am now down to 13, which are appearing to be good. I took all the other ones out, so I would not have one explode on me. I have already disected the earliest quiters to see what is going on; I now have 7 more, Late quiters, to tear apart to see what went wrong. This is a good learning experience for me, and I already have ordered some BLRW eggs to set next week. Good luck to all.

I just put them on thier sides and they do just fine!

Thank you! For those of you that went into lockdown at the same time, did you notice any pips/signs of hatching. 2 of mine pipped last night/early this am. My hatch day is tommorow. So nerve-racking! At least I know there still is a chance after the power loss!

Mine are rocking and rolling, but no visible pips yet. Maybe when I get home from work at 4:00 P.M. I will have more to report. Good luck.
