So, I’ve not let a broody hen sit on eggs until recently. She was pretty persistent! She’s a bantam Cochin. Not knowing how things would go we let her do it. She started sitting on December 3rd. I’ve tried my hand at candling with a little LCD light I got at Atwood’s. Not 100%of what I should be looking for. I did see movement in some and others not quite sure. We’ve pulled several eggs because some of our girls were still laying in the box the broody gal was in!

So while pulling new eggs as I found them and tossing eggs that didn’t look like they were progressing we finally got our first chick hatched today!!! It’s like watching water boil! I kept waiting and waiting! So exciting to hatch our first chick with our chickens!! Mom is an Easter Egger and dad is a Blue Cuckoo Marans!
I’m hopeful we’ll have a few more in the next couple of days! Curious to see what the others look like! The blue eggs are from our two EEs one of which is solid white. The other is pictured. The tan eggs are either our RIRs or Australorps. So fun!
