Hello,

I have 6 hens, one has layed a new egg for us first one! It was kind of tiny, however it was there.. will the others start to lay now? they where all purchased at the same time, I was unsure if it was a biological thing, or if they see one, they start?

Also will the eggs get larger? it looked fairly small compared to a store egg, however the yolk, etc was perfect looking nice and bright and meaty looking

They should all start laying soon, but not necessarily within a day or two. It's a hormone thing, and every chicken has its own clock.

First eggs are usually small, actually are often called "pullet eggs" as a pullet is a female under one year. Laying is likely to be irregular and have some odd things happen ( a soft shelled egg, an egg laid while on the roost, a very tiny egg, etc.) but it should all settle down once they've been laying for a few weeks.

Hi Dharlow,

what breed are they? egg size will differ for breeds. Chickens don't really have a set laying age. Most start to lay around 7-9 months, but some can take almost a year. Again, it varies with breeds.
