I bought day old chicks from Ideal Poultry shipped Feb.22. I thought i had plenty of time to get ready for egg laying. Nest boxes are up but no straw or nest material. I was supprised this afternoon when there in the empty bare nest box was my 1st. egg . Don't know when i'll get another but i got one. 16 weeks?

Mine all hatched on February 21. At exactly 16 weeks we got our first egg from the sex links (RIR x White Rock) 16 weeks and 1 day the second started laying too and that was a double yolker. All three laid by 17 weeks. The first Leghorn to lay was 17 weeks to the day. She is the only one so far out of 4 and her eggs are only about 1/4 of the size of the sex-links.

Now I am totally confused! The 19 week old chickens laid one egg 4 days ago and nothing since. We have buffs , barred rock, australorps, and sex links. They have all the behaviors like squatting , sitting and circling the nest boxes, and crooning and clucking like they mean business.

They have constant water and feed, with a small amount of scratch and food scraps. Any ideas?

I'm afraid the answer is, they lay when they lay. It will vary from breed to breed but also from chicken to chicken. The first month of egg laying will have some surprises, like eggs laid in the wrong place, maybe even from the roost, perhaps a tiny or soft shelled egg, etc. It takes a pullet about a month from the first egg to settle into her regular pattern. Just as you may see a first egg within a day or two of the red comb, squat, etc., or it may be a few weeks.

Nothing to be confused about -- just sit back and watch their ways, and enjoy.
