1st Time Chicken Owner & 1st Time Chicken Coop Builder, Video

You did an awesome job! I'm sure your chickies love it! One thing you may consider is the perch. From all of my reading on this site I understand that it may be better for your hens to roost on the flat side of a 2x4. You might check that out. Congrats on pursuing a healthy lifestyle.

Hi Jerry,

I enjoyed your photos and videos. Nice coop! We live north of you in the Central California Coast in between Atascadero and Morro Bay - up in the hills. We have 6 chickens that are 5 weeks old and we are in the process of building our coop & run. We are going to use my daughter's Little Tikes playhouse (she is 9 and does not use it anymore) as the initial coop house and we are building a run to enclose the house. Eventually we will add a real coop house in the run-when we get the money. At any rate, we better get it done quick as those chicks need a real home rather than the cardboard box.

copy that! better for them to have something to "set" on so they're not having to grip that dowel. 4" side up of a 2x4 is perfect - better if you can bevel off the edges to round it just a bit.

p.s. - enjoyed your video!
