I have 5 Barred Plymouth Rock ladies, all 9 months old, and healthy egg layers...until 2 days ago. Noticed one was limping really bad. Examined her feet. No spots of any kind, but the left one was drawn up tight. So much so, she wont stand or put any weight on it. The next morning (yesterday), another one had the same problem. I have read tons of feeds on here abour merricks disease, but I paid to have all my chicks vaccinated for merricks the day they hatched and were mailed to me. Does this vaccination wear off over time? Or could this be something else?
I thought it mght be mites or lice, so I took both girls in for a warm soak in a baking soda bath, then dried them well and thoroughly dusted them with poultry dust (TSC) I was hoping that would help, but this morning still no better.
I give them free-choice grit and oyster shell, layer pellets and lots of fresh water supply everyday.I also allow them to free range for about 2 hours a day.
