I live in Maine to begin and I’m new to raising a flock. That being said here’s what I know I spend a lot of time with my flock me my son and my wife take turns caring for them. We had 10 birds buff opingtons and a couple pairs of other breeds I forget the names. 4 days ago I went to check the feeder and water and one was in the corner not moving she had passed over night . So today I did my normal check feed and water check for eggs ect . Everything seemed fine I have a raised coop and a outdoor caged in area for them. Typically after it snows I get inside and shovel the area for them and lay down some hay and open the door. They always come running out and peck around for the day. After about 3 hours today I checked on them and one wasn’t looking right she was not responding like she normally would so I brought her into the house. She was very sluggish and would not stand. I noticed her crop was enlarged the size of baseball maybe a little smaller. So I started reading up on this and found a couple ways to help her . She would not drink or eat I started slowly giving her water with a food injector without the needle. Tipped her upside down and brown liquid poured from her mouth. After hours of reading and sitting with her I noticed yellow diarrhea. At the moment I didn’t realize the major problem I had . About 5 hours later I checked on her and she died right in front of me. So now I’m a little freaked out and concerned about the rest of my flock. Any help would be much appreciated

Sorry for your loss. Did you notice any foul smell coming from the bird’s crop? Although the yellow diarrhea and lethArgy are symptoms Of coccidiosis. I would treat with corid as a preventative. If any more birds get sick you should locate an avian vet and hopefully get some antibiotics. I hope this helps.

Not that I noticed it was the first bird I have lost but I didn’t notice and enlarged crop on her. I went out to my coop a few hour ago to inspect the rest of my flock and noticed another one had the same issue but is acting fine

when I drained some of her crop it did have a foul smell

Are they eating the hay or straw and getting impacted crops? Do you have granite poultry grit available for their gizzard to help digest food? It sounds like one developed sour crop, which can develop after impacted crop or with a fungal infection. How old are they? The best way to know what is killing your birds is to get a necropsy by your state or neighboring state’s poultry vet. Sorry for your loss. Here is a link for the 2 state vets in ME:
