We got 4 new chicks last week to add to our backyard flock. A couple of evenings later, we noticed one chick was very lethargic, couldn't stand up, etc. The other 3 looked just fine, so we isolated the sick one. In the morning, both she and one other chick were dead.
There was no pasting up, the temperature was right, the brooder conditions were the same as when we have had chicks in the past. So we suspect some kind of disease. After removing the dead ones, we cleaned out the brooder area, sanitized it completely, new litter, new feed, etc. Both of the remaining chicks seem to be healthy, and doing well.
We would like to replace the chicks. But my question is how long should we wait to make sure that the two remaining chicks aren't carrying something contagious?
